Bradley Summer Open Celebrates 50 Years

The first 50 years of the Bradley Summer Open is now complete and next year we start on the next 50 years. The BSO is the longest running college sponsored chess tournament in the country.

Co-winners of this year's BSO were masters Pete Karagianis and Tam Nguyen, both finishing with 3 wins and a draw in 4 games, followed closely by master Tim McEntee with 2 wins and 2 draws, having drawn with both winners.

The Reserve section was won by Patrick Li with a perfect 4-0. Patrick's rating is rapidly increasing, he has now gained over 300 points since this April. Patrick is in 7th Grade at Dunlap Middle School.

Peoria Richwoods Freshman Sahil Chindal, rating 1218, shocked his 1753 first round opponent for the top upset prize. Sahil later drew two other 1700 players and being last in rating in the open section, he naturally play up every round.

Class winners in the Open section were Expert Kushan Tyagi, Class A Scott Schmidt, Class B Nathan Beauchamp, and Class C Peter Marz.

Class winners in the Reserve Section were U1200 Ed Reedy, Jason Li & Quinn LaFrentz and in U1000, Ben Hartman,Jonathan Xu and Sonnet Henderson. Reserve upset went to Jonathan Xu at a 281 rating point difference. Tournament Director was Patrick Cohen.
