Chess Without Borders Hosting Charity Event

MGToday is the last day to enjoy the lowest rate for the Chess Without Borders'Grove Avenue School charity event, but registration continues.

CWB is holding a tournament February 28 with something for everyone in four sections. Time control is Game/30 with five rounds in each.

Dr. Kiran Frey and Grandmaster Yury Shulman are behind Chess Without Borders. Said Dr. Frey, "Chess Without Borders has been deeply involved in supporting two longstanding charities.

"One is the education and medical care of a girl who lives in the slums of Delhi and suffered from severe burns.

"The second project established a computer center in this same slum that is bringing computer literacy to 300 students who would never have such opportunities if it were not for our involvement."

More information is available at www.shulmanchess.com. It's also posted on the ICA calendar.

In addition to playing in the tournament, the efforts can be supported by buying a meal at the Grove Avenue School event or by purchasing a raffle ticket with cash prizes.

An 8-minute You Tube video has some additional information on the efforts, viewable here, according to Dr. Frey.

Dr. Frey says, "The success of our efforts directly translates into success for our students who take on leadership roles for these projects, which are winning awards and honors for our collaborative work."

He indicates that 100% of the proceeds will be going to these two causes. A $5l discount applies for those registering up until the day before the tournament.

According to the tournament announcement, the first five players registering who are rated above 2000 receive a $25 appearance fee if they play all five rounds.
