Description: Competitive chess in a comfortable environment, featuring relaxed time controls and generous prize fund.
DeKalb Chess Club is premiering a tournament honoring the first undisputed world champion, from 1886 to 1894. Wilhelm Steinitz passed away August 12, 1900 at the ripe age of 64. According to Harold Schoenberg, Steinitz learned to play chess at the age of 12 and didn't play seriously until his 20's. Nonetheless, he once reportedly went 25 years without losing in match play.
Venue: First Congregational Church, 615 N First Street, DeKalb, IL
Format: Four rounds, USCF-rated, Swiss Pairing. Three Sections are planned: Open, Under 1600, Under 1200.
Sections and pairing system may be changed at TD Discretion based upon registrations received.
Time Controls: Game/61 + 5 second delay, all sections.
Entry Fee: $20 with pre-registration email by Thursday 8/9, $25 at the door.
$5 discount for second and subsequent family members and subsequent members of the same scholastic team.
Prizes: Cash prizes depending upon entrants. Minimum of 67% distribution guaranteed, past events have generally returned 80% in prize money. See posted schedule at tournament site.
Distribution typically includes Class B (1799-1600) and Class D (1399-1200) prizes as well as section awards. Unrated players are eligible for section prizes only. Upset prizes too!
Tournament Rounds: 9am, 11:15am, 1:45pm, 4:00pm (ending by 6:15pm)
Byes: 1/2 point bye available for 1st round with registration by 11am.
Lunch: Food will be ordered after Round 1 to be delivered between Rounds 2 and 3. Menus at tournament. Refrigerators and microwaves available on-site.
