In memoriam: James Robert Michalak (1941 - 2017)

by NM Len Weber

The Illinois chess scene has lost another longtime favorite.  In December, we lost James "Jimbo" Michalak, after a long health battle.  This writer first met Jim at the Homewood Flossmoor Park District Chess Club (defunct in 1984).  A "Fischer boomer", Jim reached over 1800 USCF, winning several notable prizes, before leaving the tournament scene in the mid-1980s.  In more recent years, "Jimbo" spent many warm weather days as a regular at the chess haunts in Chicago, including North Avenue Beach, where he taught lessons, played all comers, hustled and got hustled, earned wins against experts and masters, and traded fearless wit and clever barbs with even the most ferocious patrons.

Pending ICA Executive Board approval, Rose Grandy will succeed Scott Daniels as the Director of Warren Junior Scholars and the ICA's Rising Stars programs.

Mr. Daniels did an amazing job guiding the programs through the 2016-2017 year, bringing vibrancy to a program which had been dormant for over a year.

Ms. Grandy has been an important part of a successful Wheaton-area chess program for the past several years and is the mother of active tournament players Sarah and Abigail Grandy.

Compilation of the 2017-2018 classes has been ongoing for several weeks but the ICA would like to afford potential participants a chance to contact the organization.

Warren Scholars and Rising Stars are programs aimed at recognizing youth accomplishments in rated chess and providing training and camaraderie-promoting activities.

All-age tournament competition as well as participation in the four major annual ICA events is encouraged for qualifiers (the All-Grade, the K-8 Championships, the Illinois Open and the Illinois Class).

Current rating eligibility suggests the following:

    Girls Boys
  K - 12 K  -  5 Junior High High School
Warren Scholars 1500 1500 1700 1900
Rising Stars 1200 1200 1200 1500

Please contact Ms. Grandy at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by September 5, 2017 if you believe your child should be considered. There is no cost to be included as a Scholar or Star -- although participation in some events will incur a fee.

The official ratings used for the 2017-2018 classes were the published US Chess June Supplement, but in some cases higher 2016-2017 peak ratings or post-June supplements are being taken into account.

A provisional list of candidates may be posted in the near future with the official class announcement coming by Friday, September 15, 2017.
