Tim Just Winter Scholastic

Fifty-eight junior players kicked off 2013 playing the Tim Just Winter Scholastic, held January 5. A contentious field required numerous tiebreak formulas to determine trophies for top 10 finishers in two sections. Nonetheless, both divisions saw clear-first winners with Robert Barr taking the Under 1200 and Trevor Tompkins winning the Under 700.

Even during the holiday season, chess is happening. A lot. The 36th Zurich Christmas Open went on from the 26th to the 30th of December with Romanian GM Levente Vajda taking first place. At the same time the Geneve Open was going on. GM Bacrot Etienne and GM Malakhatko Vadim tied for first place. The team from Hoogeveen, Netherlands won the World Cities Chess Championship. Meanwhile, GM Sandro Mareco won the 5th Open Tournament "Norberto La Porta" 2012. GM Magnus Carlsen won the 4th London Classic.
In Illinois there was just as much activity. Here are the results from around the state:
First Ever DuPage County Chess Championship

The 1st ever DuPage County Chess Championship drew over 100 players to Benedictine University on December 30th. Players from Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin competed for prize money and the coveted cup. When the last game of the tournament was finished, Avinash Rajendra found himself atop the leader board with a perfect score. Crosstable

During October, there were three winners in the first
Grand Prix
in London: Topalov, Gelfand, and Mamedyarov.
Etienne Bacrot
won the 16th Corsica Masters. GM
Mark Hebden
won the 38th Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival which he last did 22 years ago in 1990.
Mariya Muzychuk
won the 2012 Ukrainian Women's Championship.
