Emrikian Is National K-12 Kindergarten Champion; Whitney Young Wins 9th Grade Championship and K-12 Blitz

Update: On tiebreaks, Aren Emrikian has won the Kindergarten National Championship at the K-12's in Orlando. Aren lost in the final round to Caleb Marshall of Kentucky who was rated 345 points higher, but won his six previous matches, compiling the best tiebreak of four players with 6.0/7. Hudson Lutfiyya was one point back at 5.0, participating in a five-way tie for 10th place.

Whitney Young has won the 9th Grade Championship with a 15.5 score, 2.5 ahead of New York's Dalton. Akhil Kalghatgi tallied 5.5 to tie for fourth place, sixth on tiebreaks.

Gora and Novikov Top Chicago Latino Championship

Only the tournament's end could stop Christopher Gora and Andrey Novikov at the Chicago Latino Chess Championship conducted November 28.

The five-round long-time annual event was once again organized at the Rudy Lozano Branch of the Chicago Public Library by Hector Hernandez, the Branch Manager and long-time friend to chess. The event provided free entry with trophies to the top 10 and medals to all others with the best score for their grade level in school. 51 competed in the Age 14 and Under section.

Panner, Ogden, Miller and Schultz Win Sections at St Johns

Gabe Panner went a perfect four-for-four to win the Junior High section at the St. Johns 2015 tournament held November 21 in Lombard. With his championship, Gabe surpassed the 1000-ratings barrier for the first time. 

US Chess crosstables have been posted.

Sarah Grandy took clear second place with a 3.5 score. There was a five-way tie for third at 3.0. 28 competed in the section.

Colin Ogden was a perfect five-for-five in the 49-entrant Elementary section, graduating from provisional games to achieve a 738-rating.

221 Face Off At Initial 2015-16 YCFC Event at Earle STEM

YCFC Earle Lane Tech41 teams competed in the first of six YCFC events November 14 at Earle STEM Elementary on the southwest side of Chicago. The Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago is a 501(c)(3).

In the K-2 Novice section, Skinner North's Asha Lulla and Aaron Patino of St Joseph (Summit) tied for first with four wins and a draw. Asha won the top trophy with the higher tiebreaks. John Seward of Decatur took third place as the top tiebreak of the 4.0 scoregroup. Asha defeated John in the first round.

Hoesley Wins 2015 Decatur Chess Challenge

Aria Hoesley won the top section (K-6) of the 49-player Decatur Chess Challenge, completed November 10 at Decatur Classical Elementary.

Aria's 3.0 score placed her a half-point ahead of Lucas Staniszewski and Ricky Chen who finished 2.5. Lucas and Ricky drew in the first round. 12 competed in the section.

In the K-4, John Seward and William De Allaume posted perfect 3.0's to top the 16 player field.
